Meeting 7

10.26.16

From the hours of: 1:30-3

During this hour and a half I had a full sit down with my mentor and we went over some of the final paperwork for the Capstone Project, however, he did not sign them off just yet since it was not the last meeting. In this meeting I showed him the pictures I've been taking and received feedback on these photos. I learned that even though the lower the aperture doesn't always mean the best pictures. My mentor had the most to say about the photos from 10/20 when I went to EMIS. He noticed that not all of the photos had multiple people in focus and sometimes no one was in focus at all. He did say that the lighting was pretty good for indoors though, which is a plus! I also received feedback on the sports pictures that I have been taking. My mentor suggested that I use flash, however, I completely disagree with him on that. I think that flash is extremely distracting and causes too many shadows, which are not good for pictures, even though it does help with the overall lighting. I do not want to end up blinding a player and causing the ball to be taken by the other team, or something like that! However, we continued to talk about my progress on the capstone project and he was wondering what I was going to do for my product and I told him my ideas and he gave me suggestions on what to do for them. It was definitely a helpful meeting, and criticism is always your friend. No matter what.

Meeting 6

10.20.16

From the hours of: 1:00-2:30

Don't worry, I'm not skipping school! Since my fourth block class in an online course, I am allowed a senior privilege of not attending during fourth block without being counted absent. I went to East Mooresville Intermediate School with one of my friends to help her set up and then I proceeded to take pictures of her Capstone Project and her project product. During the hour and a half that I spent here I took candid shots of the sixth grade students and Alexia Martin (who did her project on art murals) working and painting their hands on the circular globe that she made. Since the photos were completely indoors, the lighting was a little bit off because of the fake fluorescent lighting in the classroom. However, for the entire time I used my 50mm lens which has an aperture of 1.8 (which is the lowest possible on that lens) which allowed my camera to have a larger depth of field but also allow in more light for the photo. This aperture setting was super helpful when looking at the photos, because when compared to photos where the aperture setting was higher than 1.8 the photos were more yellow and not as good looking. I really do think that the hour and a half that I spent at EMIS taking pictures for my friend's capstone project was a complete success. It was awesome to see another high school student working on her capstone project diligently and so creatively.

Meeting 5

10.13.16

From the hours of: 6-7:30

I attended another junior varsity football game for an hour and a half. Within these two hours I continued to take action and candid shots of players and cheerleaders. There really was not as much excitement on the field or in the stands as there was in the previous game, but there was still something in the atmosphere and the players were always ready to get on the field. Within the 1.5 hours that I spent at the game, the lighting was extremely good at first, however, going on into the night it gradually got worse and more yellow from the lights shining onto the field. I learned that the farther zoomed out you are the lower your aperture is able to get therefore allowing more light to be let into the camera which also creates a depth of field effect. So, needless to say, I continued playing with my lighting. I also learned a few more tidbits about camera settings, like how to change where the camera focuses on objects which allows me to use the rule of thirds. I also learned about manual and Tv settings. Tv is just an aperture priority where the aperture is automatically adjusted for each picture to let in the most light possible. It was extremely helpful with the poor lighting of the football game. In the end though, the 1.5  hours that I spent at this game were beneficial to me and my overall capstone project. I learned more about lighting and camera settings, like Tv, that could be beneficial and useful to me in the future.

Meeting 4

10.10.16

From the hours of 6:30-8:30

Today I attended a junior varsity football game for the duration of two hours. Within these two hours I continued to use and expand my knowledge on photography, lighting, and white balance. Within this game, I took action and candid shots of the JV cheerleaders and football players. This is the first time that I have been to a JV football game since my freshman year and it was crazier than I expected. The parking lot was extremely packed and I found it surprising that there was such a large turnout. The game had a large "hype" to it, however, there were a lot more injuries from what it seems than there usually were at the varsity games. During these two hours I worked on taking pictures that had some emotion to them, especially when one team scored or if the home team was to score. However, the night was mostly uneventful and I still worked on lighting, however, the football games are later in the day so the lighting was more yellow but that is something that I could work with. To sum up the two hours that I spent at this game, I continued to work with the lighting in my photos and attempt to capture some sort of emotion in the candid and action shots that I did take.
