Meeting 3

9.22.16

From the hours of: 5-7:30

I attended another junior varsity and varsity soccer game and continued to use my camera that my mentor gave me. However, this time I used a different lens (my mothers) which had a larger zoom than the lens my mentor gave me. During this game, I continued to take more action shots and candid shots of the players throughout the entire game. I still had to work with the lighting at this game, as it (of course) got darker as time went on. At this game, I started to toy with custom white balance which is a setting on the camera. The white balance settings (sometimes) help out with the awkward lighting that can be in the pictures. Even though I was only a beginner at white balance, it still proved helpful throughout the game in my photos. The white balance helps with the fact that the overhead lights on the field are not natural lighting so the white balance adjusts it to make it look more natural rather than fake and fluorescent. The lighting in this game was definitely worse, however. This is because it got darker earlier and made it harder to catch action shots. At this game I walked around and got different angles, some from the home side, some from the away side, and then some from the end-zones. All in all, I do think that the 2.5 hours that I spent at this game were a success, as I took a ton of pictures and continued to experiment with the lighting and white balance!

Meeting 2

9.8.16

From the hours of: 5-7:30

This meeting was in the same day as the first meeting, but at a different location where photography would actually be taking place. I attended the junior varsity and varsity Mooresville soccer games at home. I used the camera from my mentor in order to take pictures of players on both teams. These shots included both candid and action shots which is what photojournalism is all about. Throughout the game, I struggled with the lighting in many of my pictures as when it gets darker you have to change the settings on the camera. It takes a while to adjust and get a better picture especially in the dark. In order to adjust lighting on your camera it takes a bunch of different factors. Sometimes it only takes adjusting the ISO, sometimes it is the aperture, and sometimes it's the shutter speed. Using prior knowledge about cameras, I adjusted my ISO and my shutter speed as raising the aperture would make the photo darker, and the aperture was already at its lowest point. Slowing the shutter speed would make it harder for the camera to photograph a good action shot, as 1/160 or faster takes a better action shot, but makes it darker. It just takes a lot to figure out in order to get a good picture! At this meeting I took over 200+ photos (not all of them are good though) and most of these photos were taken at the JV game because of the better lighting (the sunlight helps a ton). Ultimately, I would consider this meeting a success!

Meeting 1

9.8.16

From the hours: 2:30-3:30

Today was the first meeting with my mentor. We decided to meet at the Mooresville Chick-fil-A. Here we reviewed the beginning of my Capstone project paperwork and I discussed with my mentor what exactly the Capstone project entails. I had him fill out the mentor consent form and I received a camera to use throughout my hours. This meeting was only an hour long because my mentor had to be somewhere and then we would meet again later in the day. Since this meeting was only an hour long, there was not much to discuss other than the Capstone project paperwork, my topic, and what I would be doing in my hours.
